The Parish of St. Peter the Apostle was founded in 1846, and since then, four churches have been built one after another. The Christianization of Calauag began when Fr. Diego de Oropesa set foot on its soil. Due to frequent Moro raids, both the poblacion and its Catholic community disappeared for two hundred sixty-seven years as the people retreated to Piris (now Buenavista) and Tikay (now Guinayangan). Some also took refuge in Kigtan, while others settled in Anas and later in Apad. They eventually established themselves in Pinagbayanan along the Kalawag River. Since its foundation, seventy-one priests have been assigned to the parish, many of whom are now unknown to the present generation.

The Parish of St. Peter remains alive today because it has preserved the faith inherited from its forebears. One undeniable testimony to this is its large Catholic population, which ten years ago, when the diocese was created, stood at 51,614 out of Calauag’s total population of 54,908. Over the last ten years, it has gained 18,127 new members, a clear proof that the efforts of the past hundred years have not been in vain.

Another testimony to the vitality of the parish is the growth of priestly vocations in its community, as shown by the number of seminarians and priests it has produced. To date, it has contributed seven priests to the Church, including Fr. Franklin C. Rivero (Diocese of Lucena), Fr. Justo L. Pereira (Diocese of Lucena), Fr. Ramon C. Tiama, Fr. Romulo C. Comia, Fr. Ranilo J. Pera, Fr. Teodocio Dolores, Fr. Miguel Peralta, and Fr. Roberto Peralta, the last three being members of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin.
